In this book, Joe Greene takes readers through the later stages of his cancer treatment and surgeries, highlighting the growing difficulty of managing the mental side of fighting a life-threatening illness. He and his collaborator and therapist, Jay Wilson, delve into the cultural barriers to therapy faced by many men, particularly Black men, who often have a strong reluctance to seek mental health support. Initially, Joe intended to tough it out on his own, but he gradually recognized that getting professional help from a Black therapist he could relate to was a much better choice. The book discusses the severe lack of support for attracting more Black men into therapist careers and emphasizes the need for community wellness initiatives. By shedding light on these issues, this book advocates for greater accessibility to professional therapy for Black men, ultimately fostering a healthier community.
